Scope
Conti Federal Services is currently performing a $2.3 million task order contract for the remedial action of the Pike Hill Copper Mines Superfund Site in Corinth, Vermont. The project was awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 1 through the Remediation Environmental Services (RES) suite under the Remedial Action Framework (RAF) Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract.
The Pike Hill Copper Mines site, a legacy of Vermont’s 19th-century mining era, spans over 15 acres and contains approximately 85,000 cubic yards of mine waste. Once a hub of copper extraction—with mining operations dating back to 1845—the site ceased operations in the 1960s and has since become a source of environmental concern. The mine waste piles continue to contaminate local surface water and sediment with elevated levels of aluminum, copper, iron, and zinc, posing risks to both ecological and human health.
Conti Federal is executing the project in two phases. Phase I involves in-situ stabilization of targeted areas, along with preparatory activities for the broader Phase II effort. In compliance with federal environmental regulations, all work is being conducted under the guidelines of the Endangered Species Act to protect threatened and endangered bats known to inhabit the area. Additionally, the project adheres to the National Historic Preservation Act to ensure the protection of cultural and historical resources near the site.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2026. With a strong foundation of regional experience—including the successful stabilization of a 30-acre copper tailings dam at the nearby Elizabeth Mine Superfund Site in Strafford, Vermont—Conti Federal brings a proven track record in managing complex Superfund cleanup projects across the Northeast.
